LINCOLN, Neb. — As Nebraska football prepares to open its season against Ohio early next month, what once seemed like a clear-cut backfield hierarchy is rapidly evolving into one of the most compelling position battles of fall camp.
While most analysts still expect Mekhi Nelson to take the field as RB1, true freshman Jamal Rule is doing everything in his power to rewrite the narrative and challenge for significant playing time.
Jamal Rule Surges Into the RB2 Conversation
The buzz surrounding the former three-star recruit has been building steadily since he arrived on campus this spring. Originally choosing Nebraska over Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Michigan State, Rule has impressed the coaching staff with a dramatic summer turnaround.
Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen made it clear after Friday’s practice that the young running back has earned a major role in the offense, hinting that Rule is closing in on the RB2 spot at the very least.
«He doesn’t look like a freshman to me,» Holgorsen noted. While admitting Rule appeared plenty nervous in the spring, Holgorsen praised his summer progress and improved pass protection. «Encouraged where he’s at. He’s going to play. We’ll see it here in a few weeks.»

National Media Take Notice of the Breakout Candidate
Rule’s summer ascension has not gone unnoticed outside Lincoln. CBS Sports recently named him one of the most «overlooked» players in the Big Ten, while Fansided’s Chris Landers listed him among eight national breakout candidates alongside high-profile talent across the conference.
Landers even suggested Rule could push for the starting nod next to quarterback Anthony Colandrea in Week 1, writing: «If the Huskers have a running game, this offense should have everything it needs to make some noise in the Big Ten.»
While Mekhi Nelson remains the primary candidate to start after stepping up when Emmett Johnson declared for the draft, Rule’s rapid progress ensures Nebraska enters the season with a potent, deep backfield ready to exceed expectations.
