Nebraska basketball’s 7-0 start has been dealt a major blow. Senior guard Connor Essegian announced on social media that he will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a significant right ankle injury in the Huskers’ 80-73 win over Winthrop. The setback forces Nebraska to move forward without one of its most reliable shooting options off the bench.
Essegian, who awkwardly came down in the second half of Tuesday’s game, underwent tests that confirmed the severity of the injury. Athletic trainer Andrew McCabe explained that recovery for such an injury typically requires two to three months. Head coach Fred Hoiberg confirmed the decision to shut him down: “I feel awful for Connor because of all the work he puts in. We don’t want to rush him back without being 100 percent, so he will apply for a medical hardship. While he won’t be playing, Connor will find ways to lead and help our program.”
The 6-foot-4 senior has been a consistent contributor, averaging 5.4 points per game this season, including two double-digit performances. Last year, he averaged 10.7 points per game and led the Huskers with 78 three-pointers, the most by a Nebraska player since 2019. Over his career, Essegian has scored 929 points in 110 games.
In his announcement, Essegian leaned on faith, quoting Proverbs 3:5-6 and Jeremiah 29:11: “It hurts me to know that I will not be on the court to help our team. But I will be there every step of the way. We still have history to make this year, so let’s get it done. I am fully trusting what the Lord has in store for me and this team.”
Despite the injury, Essegian is expected to continue serving as a leader off the court, a role he embraced before the season by emphasizing team chemistry and his experience in the Big Ten. “You kind of just learn through the fire,” he reflected earlier this year.
The Huskers now face the challenge of sustaining their unbeaten run without one of their veteran sharpshooters, raising questions about how the team’s depth will hold up as conference play looms.
