Rising Star: Why Kade Pietrzak’s Next Step Is the Secret Weapon for Nebraska’s 2026 Defense

LINCOLN, Neb. — In the world of Big Ten football, making a smooth transition from high school to the college gridiron is rare. Doing it with virtually no runway is even rarer. Yet, that is exactly what sophomore edge rusher Kade Pietrzak accomplished during his breakout freshman campaign last year. Now, as the Husker football program gears up for the 2026 season, the West Fargo, North Dakota native finds himself squarely in the spotlight as one of the roster’s most vital building blocks, landing at No. 23 on the annual Most Indispensable Huskers list.

Nebraska’s defensive front is undergoing a fascinating schematic transformation under defensive coordinator Rob Aurich. Moving toward a dynamic 4-2-5 system, the coaching staff is actively searching for explosive, edge-setting players who can consistently disrupt opposing backfields and dramatically increase quarterback pressure.

Ahead of the Curve: A Freshman Season to Build On

Pietrzak arrived on campus just last summer, but he wasted no time earning the respect of his peers and coaches alike. By September, veteran players and the defensive staff were already raving about his relentless motor and natural instincts.

«I think he’s got great DNA when it comes to being a football player,» the defensive staff noted during his early days in Lincoln. «He’s got that look in his eye.»

That look translated into a whopping 278 snaps as a true freshman—a clear indicator that the young defender is well ahead of the traditional learning curve. Pietrzak maximized his opportunities, totaling 17 tackles, including seven tackles for loss and two sacks, ranking him third on the team in both impact categories. Remarkably, within his first 10 snaps as a Husker, he forced a crucial safety against Akron and nearly repeated the feat a few weeks later against Michigan.

«I knew coming in here, Coach said there would be an opportunity if I worked my butt off and gave it everything I’ve got, and I think I did that,» Pietrzak reflected. «I think I earned the opportunity to be part of this team and play next to these guys.»

Leveling Up the Pass Rush in 2026

While veteran edge defenders Anthony Jones and Cameron Lenhardt are expected to anchor the unit, Nebraska needs its younger core—headlined by Pietrzak and Williams Nwaneri—to take a massive leap forward. Head coach Matt Rhule has explicitly pointed to Pietrzak’s high-energy playing style as a perfect fit for the team’s new defensive philosophy, which prioritizes playing on the opponent’s side of the line of scrimmage.

The primary area of focus heading into the fall is refining technique and finishing plays. While Pro Football Focus noted some typical freshman growing pains—including a 29.2 tackling grade—the raw tools are undeniably there. Under the guidance of position coaches Roy Manning and Corey Brown, the defensive line is working to turn near-misses into definitive stops.

The statistical goals for 2026 are clear. Last season, the Huskers averaged a modest 1.69 sacks per game, finishing 100th nationally with 22 total sacks. For Nebraska to compete at the highest level in the Big Ten, Husker fans want to see that number climb to 30 or beyond.

«We can teach them the skills, the drills, the fundamentals. But they have to have the willingness to be coached and be coached hard,» Coach Manning emphasized. «They have to have that kind of growth mindset, not a fixed mindset.»

For Pietrzak, that mindset is already second nature. «I love the game, and I think I’d be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t play with that motor,» he said. «When I was being recruited, that was one of the things they said they liked, and I’m going to keep playing with that motor because it’s necessary to play great football.»
